Dos & Don’ts – Redeem Points

For those who value luxury and travel rewards, redeeming your points wisely is essential. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or new to the world of frequent flying, understanding how to leverage your points effectively can maximise the value of points. These essential dos and don’ts are intended for first and business class travellers to make the most of their rewards:

Dos Don'ts

Transfer your bank or supermarket loyalty points to airlines only

When Coles send you points offers, do NOT choose to take discounts on bills.
Always choose to accumulate points, then transfer them to Velocity.
The value of these points is the highest when using them for premium flights.

Use your airline points for first and business class flights only

Do not use your bank or airline or supermarket points for gift cards, cash or shopping

Use your hotel reward points for hotel stays or Experiences

Generally do not use your airline points for shopping

Transfer your flybuy points to Velocity when there’s an extra % bonus points offer

Do not auto transfer your flybuy ponts to velocity

Transfer your Amex points when there is a promotion offering bonus points.

Do not transfer your hotel points to airlines

If you want to use points for hotels, transfer directly to the hotel programs, for example, transfer Amex points to Hilton or Marriott

Do not transfer your Amex points to any airline programs until you have secured suitable reward seats

Always transfer your points from Amex or banks to the airlines, for redemption when the value of your points is the highest. Do you use them on third-party travel websites.

Do not use Qantas points to redeem hotel bookings, even if it’s 43% off

When Points Plus Pay option is presented to you, always choose to pay with cash. Keep you points for first and business class flight conversions.

qantas points plus pay conversion

Do not use Poinsts Plus Pay, unless it is a small amount for a redemption top up (due to short of points).  The value of your points in this case is very low – 1,887 required to drop the price from $127 to $117, i.e each point is worth 0.005 (half cent), when the value is as much as 2 cents or more when redeemed for first and business class flights, i.e 4 times more.

Only transfer your Amex points to the airlines or ocassionally to the hotels programs.

Don’t transfer Amex points to Everyday Rewards.

-

Do not use your points to buy your flights on airfare booking websites, such as Webjet or American Express Travel. The value of your points are low.

-

Do not use points to pay for cash bills.

-

Do not transfer your points to family members on platforms that charge high fees. It’s better to redeem flights for them instead.
