Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) to Exit Star Alliance: Changes for Loyalty Program Members

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has announced that it will be leaving the Star Alliance network effective 1 September 2024. This change will affect many frequent flyers, especially those who are part of loyalty programs such as Flying Returns.

Important Updates for Flying Returns Members

For members of the Flying Returns program, the following changes will take effect:

  • Earning and Redeeming Points: Members will only be able to earn or redeem Reward Points on SAS-operated flights up until 31 August 2024. After this date, no Flying Returns Points can be earned or redeemed on SAS flights or with its partner airlines.
  • Tier Status Benefits: From 31 August 2024 onwards, tier status benefits will no longer apply to SAS-operated flights. This includes benefits such as priority boarding, extra baggage allowance, and access to airport lounges.
  • Claiming Missed Points: Members who travelled on SAS flights before 31 August 2024 will still have the opportunity to claim any missed points. Claims must be submitted by 31 October 2024.

New Opportunities Under SAS’s Loyalty Program

Although SAS is exiting Star Alliance, the airline will continue to offer its own loyalty program. Beginning 1 September 2024, passengers flying with SAS or its partners will have the chance to earn rewards under the SAS Loyalty Programme. The exact details and terms of this program are still forthcoming, but it represents a new opportunity for SAS loyalists to earn rewards.

What If You’ve Already Booked a Flight?

If you have booked a flight with SAS using your Flying Returns Reward Points before 31 August 2024, your booking remains valid. However, please be aware that any changes to flight dates will not be accommodated after this period. It is advisable to finalise your travel plans to avoid any potential issues.
