Amex Transfer Frequent Asked Questions
There isn’t a single “best” transfer partner. Each frequent flyer program has its own strengths and weaknesses depending on where you want to fly and which airline you’re booking.
If you want to get the most value from your points, it’s worth learning the different strategies. Our Points Advisor Mastery courses walk through some of the most popular programs Aussies use and shows you how to locate high-value flight redemptions.
No. American Express Membership Rewards points can only be transferred by the primary American Express cardholder, and the frequent flyer account must be in the exact same name. If the names don’t match, the transfer will usually be rejected by the program partner.
Most Membership Rewards transfers happen within a few minutes. However, American Express officially recommends allowing up to a few days for the points to appear in your frequent flyer or hotel account.
No. Once you transfer points from American Express they can’t be moved back.
Membership Rewards points themselves do not expire as long as your account remains open and in good standing. However, once points are transferred to a frequent flyer or hotel program, that program’s expiry rules apply. For this reason, it’s generally best to only transfer points when you’ve already located a flight or hotel redemption you plan to book.
Most American Express cards that earn Membership Rewards points allow transfers to airline and hotel partners.
The main exception is co-branded airline cards, such as those are directly linked to Qantas Frequent Flyer or Velocity Frequent Flyer. These cards earn points directly with the airline program, and the points are automatically swept into your frequent flyer account each month instead of being held by American Express as Membership Rewards Points.
